# F Table

The F Table is used to look up F Statistics in hypothesis testing. While it’s more common to use technology like Excel or SPSS to run tests, the F Table can be useful for quickly looking up several different values at once.

Note on reading the tables: DF2 is read DOWN the first column. DF1 is read ACROSS the top row. For example, if you wanted to find DF2 = 4, DF1 = 1 in the first table (α = .10), you would get 4.54477.

## What is an F Table?

The F table is used in statistics to find critical F-values, called F statistics, in hypothesis testing.
Like the normal distribution curve, the F-distribution has a total probability of 1 under the curve. It differs from the normal distribution curve because the F-table is a left-skewed distribution and the curve begins at 1 on the left (the normal probability curve is based on 0 at the center):

### What you need to look up a probability in the F-table:

1. Degrees of freedom (df). Usually written as Fn,d where n is the numerator and d is the denominator.
2. An alpha level (typically 1%, 5% or 10%).

There is a separate table for each alpha level (The F-Table on this site actually has four separate tables for an alpha level of .01, .05, .025 and .1), so the F-table is actually a series of tables. Each table has the numerators in the top row and the denominator along the side (far left column).

## What is an F Table: Sample Questions:

Q1. Find the F-value for an alpha level (α)of 5% and degrees of freedom F1,2
A. Looking up F1,2 (numerator of 1 and denominator of 2) in the F-table, we get 18.51:

You can also use the F-table to find alpha. For example:
Q2. What is the alpha level that corresponds to: P(F7,1) > 58.9059?.
A. The F-table gives you the area to the right (greater than), so if you wanted to area to the left (less than), find the alpha-value and then subtract from 1. The alpha we found was 0.1, so 1-0.1 = 0.9.

Note: Because the F-table uses numerators and denominators to find statistics, F7,1 is not the same at F1,7, so the order is important.
